Drop the Rock: Countdown to
Empowerment Day
September 2008
For over 35 years, the Rockefeller Drug Laws—New York’s wasteful, ineffective and racially-biased sentencing policies— have had a disproportionate impact on low-income communities of color. Too often, the communities hardest hit by criminal justice policies are left out of the political process and are excluded from the debate on these issues. Drop the Rock (DTR), the CA’s campaign to repeal the Rockefeller Drug Laws, wants to change that.
To remind New Yorkers just how critical it is for ALL our voices to be heard on these issues, DTR will launch its first-ever Drop the Rock Empowerment Day on Saturday, October 4. Our volunteer teams will take to the streets, canvassing neighborhoods across the city and state to educate people about the Rockefeller Drug laws, register New Yorkers to vote and collect signatures for our 35th Year Petition calling on policymakers to repeal the drug laws (click here for a map of our New York City table locations). From the South Bronx to Park Slope, from Hempstead to Poughkeepsie, our teams will be virtually everywhere, so keep your eyes open for us and be sure to stop by to register to vote or sign a petition if we are in your neighborhood.
Check out our brand new website, www.droptherock.org, to sign the 35th Year Petition online, or make a tax deductible donation.
