A Message from the Director

Dear Friend,

The Correctional Association of New York is pleased to launch our inaugural eNewsletter, designed to keep you up-to-date on CA news, events, publications, press, campaigns, coalition building, and ways that you can get involved in our work. Our emails will alert you to important developments from our four projects —Prison Visiting, Juvenile Justice, Women in Prison, and Drop the Rock.

Our messages will be concise and regular—but not so frequent as to become overwhelming. We thought that you, as a friend of the CA, would be interested in these updates.

This first issue comes at an exciting time. As you may know, the New York State Office of Children and Family Services recently announced plans to close six juvenile jails. This step will save the state millions, but more importantly, it is part of an agency-wide shift towards community-based programming and alternatives to incarceration.

The CA’s Juvenile Justice Project has long advocated for these reforms, and strongly supports the agency’s commitment to fixing its broken system. But OCFS faces challenges in making these sweeping changes—namely representatives bent on using jails as a response to weak upstate economies.

Please visit the CA website to read more about our activities to back up the closures and redirect cost savings to more effective, less costly alternative programs.

Please also see the links to the right for several more items recently posted to our website. Thank you for your support.

Yours,

Bob Gangi
Executive Director
